About the play:

Based on an absurd but true story, this poignant and sometimes hilarious play by recently deceased South African playwright Athol Fugard is about a Russian soldier who deserted the army during World War II and spent decades hiding in his pigsty.

The play is set in a pigsty in a small village, symbolizing a dank and unwholesome world. Through this story of exile and desperation, the characters embody the struggle between personal redemption and societal judgment.

Pavel's journey reflects his deep remorse for desertion, his desire for forgiveness and the natural inescapable human desire for freedom. The play examines the nature of humanity, dignity, and the impact of war on the individual psyche.
