Mohan Naik

In his sixties today, Mohan Naik is a Goan artist who has over the last couple of decades, carved out a distinct and unique niche for himself in the art world both nationally and internationally. What defines this artist is his rootedness in nature, his focus on the basic experiences of a simple village life, his closeness and fondness for livestock as companions, his vision of an ideal rural world and his belief in his own ability to portray through his art a constantly evolving yet characteristically stylized depiction of this harmonious world. A Fine Arts graduate — he has had multiple solo and group exhibitions in India and abroad but still enjoys turning to memories and experiences in Goa as resources for his paintings. His artwork always has a warm, glowing yet vibrant blend of shapes, colours and figures that speak of the softness, gentleness and peace that can only be found when one turns back to nature. Hence his work has found appeal with one and all, irrespective of nationality, religion or language. Mohan's style of painting almost always uses warm mellow shades often in oils or pastels and portray very stylistic imagery of village life and personal interactions between people on canvas. From his distinct style in capturing the female form to his much loved goats with extremely expressive human eyes, his fans and collectors admire the soft subtle yet warm tones in his work.
